I founded a TNR and cat rescue project on Vis (Street Cats of Vis) because until recently there was no vet on the island, and over time, I’ve inevitably taken several cats into my care. Cats that haven't found homes live on my land, never more than 20 at a time though. The current colony size is 15.

Would you like to spend Christmas and New Year's in an old stone house one block back from the bay of Vis, on the beautiful island of Vis, in Croatia? The Vis archipelago been given the UNESCO Global Geopark label and is a nature-lovers paradise. I need to go visit family in Belgium for a couple weeks (haven’t seen them in two years) and need someone to stay in my house and look after my two house cats. One of them needs to be monitored and given a laxative if he doesn't poop daily; he gets constipated sometimes, and we don’t want him to develop megacolon. Giving the laxative isn’t difficult: if you've never administered oral meds to a cat before, I can teach you. I think this would be an ideal house sit for a cat-loving couple that also enjoys hiking, because in addition to the two cats who live in my house, I have a colony of about 15 living on my land, and will need someone to help feed them while I'm away. I have a friend on the island who could share that task, alternating days. It's a beautiful walk up a hill through a forest, and takes me about 40 minutes because I'm slow. My younger friend can walk up in 30 minutes. I don’t mind having a single cat lover here either, as long as you’re someone who actually loves being alone with cats. There won’t be much available here in the way of socializing with other humans, but you will be able to contact my friend, a young woman from New Zealand, who can help you if you need anything. I’m posting early because I’d really like to find the right fit. I want to find someone like me who can hike up to the land every other day to feed the land cats in addition to living in the house and looking after the two indoor cats. This summer tourist destination will be a ghost town in December and January: most bars and restaurants will be closed, but local grocery stores remain open, so plan on cooking your own meals. I’m in the process of renovating the ground floor and expect that to be finished by early July, so you’ll have a nice new kitchen to play with. The weather will be cold, probably windy and possibly rainy, but still nice for hiking in the hills or strolling around the bay.The house doesn't have central heating, but I've always been fine with plug-in radiators and warm blankets. Cats need to be fed twice per day, and I'll provide cat food of course. You would be living in a very rudimentary tiny house surrounded by beautiful nature about a 30-minute hike to and from town, and a 20-minute hike to the sea. There's hiking up or downhill through a small forest to get to and from town. You'll need a backpack, good shoes and a headlamp: no suitcases! There's no fridge, no shower, and the toilet is outside. Of course you can find ways to bathe, and you can come to my house in town once a week to take a hot shower and do your laundry, but up on the land it's very rudimentary. My neighbors on the land will be there occasionally, but they have their own lives and you won’t have much interaction with them unless it happens organically. The tiny house is TINY, so if you're a couple or just friends traveling together, perfect! I'll accept solo travelers too, if you can handle being alone all the time for a month in a remote location. It's a nature-loving introvert's dream come true, but it's not for everyone. My land is about a 30-minute hike uphill from the port of Vis. It's a nice walk uphill to the edge of town, then along a relatively flat dirt road with a great view of the bay, then uphill again on a footpath winding through a forest, then finally along the crest of the hill on a very rocky footpath that slopes gently into the valley along the edges of fields. The Earth Garden consists of the tiny house, its backyard, a couple small fields and a tiny forest. It sits on the edge of a small valley where my neighbors have a family farm. They also have a big, loud generator they run occasionally. If you're lucky, the wind will blow the sound away from you. If not, you should be able to escape it once you're inside, or on the other side of the structure. And if you listen to or play music it might not even be a problem, since your music will be closer. Some people haven't been bothered by the generator, but for those who are super sensitive to noise, I have to mention it. Don't know if it will even be much of an issue in April, really. A small solar panel provides minimal electricity (light and plugs), and you can get a signal for mobile data, but sometimes it can be glitchy. There's always free wifi in town, though. There's no fridge, but there are large and small gas-powered cookers, as well as a small cast iron wood stove for winter heating and cooking. I'll provide kitchen equipment and drinking water, but you'll need to provide your own food. There are two single beds, bunk-bed style, with bedding. The composting toilet is outside in the bushes, and there's a rainwater cistern where you'll get water for bathing. You can come to my house once a week for a hot shower and to do laundry too. The most beautiful part of my land is the Sea Garden, where you can go to enjoy a view across the sea to Hvar, Brač and the mainland mountains in the distance. There’s also a rough-cut walking path nearby that can get you down to the water (the bay of Rogačić) in 20 to 30 minutes, depending on how athletic you are. If you love hiking, you’ll be in heaven here. Vis has many hiking trails through hills and valleys, often with stunning sea views along the way. Exploring the island by bicycle or scooter is also fun. I don't know how to delete the photo of my house from my profile: that's where you can come once a week to take a hot shower and do laundry, but you'll actually be living in the tiny house on the land.

The tiny house has solar electricity and you can get a mobile data signal there, so you won't be completely disconnected from humanity.

I don't have any vehicles to offer you during your stay. Even if you do everything on foot, there’s a lot to explore. There’s also a bus that goes from Vis to Komiza and back at least twice per day. If you travel with your own car, you could get out and explore the island in more detail. If you’re a cyclist who can deal with hills, that would work too!

The biggest attraction here is NATURE. Vis is a beautiful small island in the Adriatic sea, desolate in winter, great for people who like to be alone and are self-sufficient and love hiking.
