We have two dogs, both female, both sterilised. Oh and both rescued from dog pounds when we lived in Spain. And that's where there similarities end! The older girl is Dottie: she's a very small, mixed breed girl who apparently believes she's a Rhodesian Ridgeback, a dragon or something! I had never been a fan of small dogs, but, when I was asked to foster a 6 week old Dottie for a month, it only took a week for me to tell the charity that they were "not getting this girl back!!!! She's incredible!" Her personality was, and remains, HUGE. She loves nothing more than cuddling up with someone...... She sleeps on our bed at night, but also has her own space downstairs if you don't want to share yours with her! The younger, more demure lady of the house is around 15x the size of Dottie, but remains terrified of her! Lua is a Belgian Malinois, and another rescue from Spain, but she had been with her previous owner for about 6-8 months. And, in that time, her previous owners absolutely terrified her. She came to us very nervous, anxious and literally scared of her own shadow. But, in the …

But, in the 2½ years since we had the privilege of adopting her, she's changed so much, she's learnt to play with toys, discovered the joys of cuddles and become a lovely, and loving, member of our pack! She is, even now, sometimes nervous of new situations until we tell her that she's "ok, nothing to be scared of" etc. Once she gets over that, she's absolutely fine. Very protective of her home, food bowl (only from Dottie!) and whoever is with our pack when we go out. We tend to walk her away from the village to reduce any stress levels she may encounter and we're extremely lucky to be in an area surrounded by gorgeous countryside walks. Sometimes her nervousness can come across as "ggggrrrr" but it's really just her being a big scaredy cat. At these times she looks too Dottie for some reassurance and direction: If Dottie tells her that's enough, then it's enough. If Dottie says it's ok to get stroked/fed treats etc, then she takes that onboard too. Jemima, our most recent addition, is a cat who was left behind in France when her previous owners returned to the UK. We don't understand either side of that particular equation, but she's such a gorgeous girl, we have no idea why, or how, they could do that. She tends to keep herself away from the dogs but if you have time to have a coffee in the garden she will join you for some loving purrs. None of the animals are difficult but they are all individuals. We will have a detailed file for their care and likes but mainly they just all want some loving.... And feeding, obviously.

Our home used to be the old pharmacy AND the old home of the Mayor. Now though, it's the place where Jackie & Steve share the duties of servants to 2 very different dogs and one very "typical" cat! We're lucky to be based in the small town/large village of Adriers in the region of Vienne in France. We are about 12 steps away from the Boulangerie and 40 from the local bar & Épicerie. You can get ALL of the essentials between these two stores, you know; bread, wine, cheese, fresh goods, frozen essentials and, importantly, a Café Au Lait most days. Oh, and spectacular Tartelette de Frais!!!!! A little further afield, there is L'isle Jourdain a town that straddles the gorgeous Vienne river, with supermarkets, bars, pâtisseries, restaurants etc. And the nearby Circuit d'Vienne racetrack which hosts annual Ferrari & Porsche weekends amongst many others. In (and outside) our house, we have plenty of rooms, space, bedrooms, bathrooms and a wonderful garden at the back..... And at the front....oh, and one over the road too!!! If you like plants, you will love our very different & secure garden areas! With homegrown flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs, depending upon …

We always want our home to feel exactly like that: a HOME. That doesn't mean it's messy or unkempt, far from it. But neither do we want you to feel as though you can't enjoy being in our home and feeling comfortable. Each bedroom has en-suite facilities with either shower or bath as well as hand basin and toilet. We will provide towels, bedding etc. We have electric radiators in the bedrooms and communal rooms, plus log burning stoves in our lounge and dining room. Our secure, enclosed back garden is almost completely surrounded by walls and our barn, so it can be a haven from any inclement weather; there is almost always an area to enjoy a coffee, wine or food in the sun. In warmer months, we provide furniture for the garden so you can enjoy getting a tan or just boosting your Vitamin D. We love this garden and spend most of the days out there at least for some part of the day or evening. We have a BBQ & firepit to maximise that outdoor life enjoyment. So, despite being in the village, once you close the doors, you can feel as if you've "gotten away …

Depending upon how far you want to travel, and what you like doing, the region has something for almost everyone. Within a 5 minute walk, you can be on a labyrinth of countryside walkways, tree-lined, going over streams, or walking around the villages' fishing lake. There are regular events & fairs at the local village hall (Salle de Fêtes) as well as sporting facilities, from rugby to boules. The is a play & activity area here for kids of all ages (be careful on the 'death slide' won't you?). Fishing permits can be purchased at the local shop, season permitting. A 10 minute drive will get you to L'Isle Jourdain and a reasonably large supermarket. Also in the town there are a variety of bars, restaurants & cafes, walks, including over the viaduct that crosses the River Vienne and watersports and an adventure park that runs alongside the river (seasonal). In other nearby villages you can find lakes with sandy beaches, holiday parks, bars etc. A 20 minutes drive gets you a choice of larger towns, each with cinemas, theatres, wider range of shopping, restaurants, museums, art gallery, cinema etc. Montmorillon gives you access to the STV fast train system. It's the home of a Macaroon museum and hold a literary festival annually, amongst other things. 60 minutes gets you a choice of two cities, each with their own airport, further STV & rail options, zoo & botanical gardens. Poitiers has the Futurescope theme park too if you're feeling adventurous or are seeking some thrills!!! The whole area is home to Château after Château, inspiring in their own way. Each village still retains its own character, some bustling others tranquil. We will leave an info pack of our favourite places and walks etc, but other than that, we suggest that you enjoy rural France for what it is: a quiet way of life that has been lost to most countries, whilst offering you some real modern touches like fibre optic broadband and a visiting food truck or two!
