There are no pets to look after, but there is watering and weeding of the plants in the yard and occasional trimming. During the rainy season, watering is less, but there are more weeds. Also, raking up the yard is required. The yard isn’t huge, we just need it to be kept looking tidy, hopefully our fruit trees will be producing a bit of fruit. The deck needs to be swept daily as well as the upstair sitting area, the gheckos leave us presents every day:) Should you choose to hire a housekeeper, the rates are very affordable. Otherwise, it will be your responsibility to keep the house clean and tidy. We will cover the internet charges, but the hydro will be your responsibility as well as the propane refill when it’s empty. Both of these are very inexpensive compared to Canada, the propane is a small tank that is used for hot water and the kitchen stove top on the island. We rarely use the hot water and usually turn the tank off when we are there and just use the outdoor shower, very refreshing. We housesat in Barra de Potosi for five months in the fall of …

The house is a large L shaped single level (1600 sq ft) not inc the outside upstairs terrace. There is air conditioning in the bedroom only and three large ceiling fans in the big kitchen/living room area. We don’t use the air conditioning, just the fan in the bedroom at night. There is a queen size memory top air mattress should you choose to sleep outside upstairs as well, or need a spare bed. We planned to put in netting and set up a sleeping space on the terrace this time down, but are unable to travel. My husband loves sipping his nightcap under the stars and has fallen asleep and slept up there a few times! There is a blue tooth rechargeable speaker at the house as well.

You can buy pretty much all your daily necessities in the village, there are numerous little markets. We usually bus or cab into Zihuatanejo (25 minute drive) twice a month to stock up on anything we can’t find in the village, There is a big Mega store that has everything, as well as a Sam’s Club (small version of Costco) and a Bodega (like Walmart.) The van goes right by the house for getting to the airport and drops you across the street from the van to catch into Zihuatanejo. There are hospitals and clinics in Zihuatanejo. If there was a medical emergency at night, we have a friend in town who can be reached after hours who owns a taxi. There are many enramadas in the village on the beach that serve good food and drinks at very reasonable prices. At night, in the village, there are a few dining options, if you decide not to cook. Taxis don’t run after 7 pm usually, so we either walk or bike into town, it’s very safe. We wear headlamps and there is rarely traffic, very peaceful and serine. During the day, we often walk into town on the beach, it’s a short walk and the beach is truly amazing There is no nightlife in Barra as far as nightclubs or discos are concerned, but there is a Tortuga Cafe/bar that is owned and ran by a great couple originally from the USA, and who like us, visited and got the “bug”and are now residents! They are temporarily closed because of covid, but all the other small businesses are open. There are also volunteer opportunities should you want to help out in the community. We have listed the house sitting assignment as of March 1, however if you wanted to start sooner, that would be fine. This assignment is not for anyone who is used to large centres or metropolis minded folk. If you enjoy biking, walking or running the beach, swimming, surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing and enjoying local culture, this is the town for you. There are no paddle boards or kayaks at the house, but you can rent in town at very reasonable prices from our local friends. This also helps support the community. One last thing to mention, because we are 2 km out of town, this may not be suitable for a single female who is not comfortable being alone at night. We have never once felt threatened nor afraid and sleep with our patio doors open to get the night breeze. We lock the gate around the yard if we remember, and honestly feel safer at our home in Mexico than our home in BC. We have never had an issue in Barra, nor Zihuatanejo.

We love to bike in the morning out to Los Achotes, a very small and friendly town. If you want to continue another km or so, you can loop around through El Zarco and back. We enjoy freshly squeezed orange juice before biking the very scenic countryside back home. It’s 10 km to Los Achotes and a nice leisurely ride. I also walk dogs at the local shelter, a short bus or bike ride away. There is a rustic little bar right around the corner from our house as well where we frequently make pit stops for a cold cerveza. You can do as much or as little as you want really. There is always someone to meet and talk to if you want to know anything at all and the locals and expats are all very helpful. We have made many good friends before and after buying our home and unfortunately, until retirement, can only use it for short durations. Anyone we’ve told about the lovely Mexican town we consider home and and has visited, has fallen in love and now visit us every year. There is limited English with many of the locals, learning or knowing Spanish …

There is limited English with many of the locals, learning or knowing Spanish is definitely a bonus. We speak little Español, but we get by just fine and usually get a few laughs when we attempt to test ourselves.
