Feeding the cats, giving them fresh water, giving them a little fuss when you watch tv, brush them (if they will allow it). They will be a bit stand offish initially and keep a distance but they like the company.

There are some nice walks around and adjacent towns have things like cinemas/bowling/watersports.
Glasgow and Edinhurgh both aren’t far at all and it’s around 10 mins to either of the main Scottish motorways so a decent non city base for exploring.
