Needs and animals

Pet-sitting | Big garden | Vegetable patch | 1 Cat

Our cat is getting elderly and spends most of her time in the conservatory including at night, but does like to be indoors if the weather is bad, and also for some company. The pots and veg. garden need watering twice a week and lawn cutting once a week, depending on the weather. Post box will need emptying and we would like to be notified of any bills that come in.

House

1950s detached house on the edge of pretty village with views of mountains and forests. Conservatory and terrace across the front of the house to make the most of the sun, and view of the garden with woods and river beyond. Not posh but comfortable. Woodburner and gas central heating, double glazed, off street parking, no pool but large lake 10 mins drive and river swimming 10 mins walk.

The village is peaceful but friendly, with a mix of French, English and Dutch residents. The chateau has open- air food stalls and music every Saturday night in the summer, and there are also lots of events as well as shops and restaurants in historic Mirepoix, 9kms. away. There are no services in the village apart from bakers and butchers vans which come round several times a week Wonderful walking and cycling country including the old railway line (10 minutes walk from our house) that is now a walking/cycling path linking Mirepoix with many other towns and villages in the area. Swimming, paddle boarding and other water sports in Lac Montbel, 10 mins. drive away, the Pyrenees mountains are 45 mins. drive, Andorra, the Mediterranean coast 1.5 hours and the Spanish border 2 hours drive. There is no public transport in the village so a car is essential.

The hosts helped me to feel welcome and at home straight away and had tried to think of everything I might need for my stay, They gave good explanations of how the house works and what was needed and there we also written instructions. The house is low maintenance, practical and comfortable. It was enjoyable to live there in the calm atmosphere, surrounded by nature, the views are amazing and I never got tired of the beautiful sunrises and seeing the tops of the Pyrenees far away. The neighbours are friendly but not intrusive. It’s a beautiful area with lots of nice places close by to explore by walking or driving. Poppy is a lovely cat to look after- gentle, happy and independent. She can be timorous or distrustful at first contact but becomes a very good companion with time.
