Our cat Alfie loves human company. He likes to sit on laps, but only the ones he chooses. He is 14 years old and a big ginger boy. He is quite a stay at home cat, though he does go into the back garden but usually not for long, We do not allow him out of the front of the house, Generally he likes to be close to one of his humans. He is quite a nervous cat despite his appearance, and can be startled by loud noises. He is wary of children particularly the noisy variety. He prefers peace and quiet. He does have occasional arguments with other cats in the neighbourhood, and for this reason we keep him in at night. His bed is in our utility room, which is also where he is fed. We have a basement attached to the utility room, where there is a litter tray for him to use at night. Alfie must never be left overnight. It is fine for sitters to go out during the day for up to eight hours occasionally. It would also be okay to go out in the evening from time to time as long as he is secured in the house after dark. We had a recent scare when Alfie went to the vet for some dental treatment and they discovered a heart murmur. Luckily he does not need any medication; but if he were to develop a rapid heartbeat he would need to visit the vet. He eats science plan oral care food. Alfie likes to join us for breakfast in the morning, sitting on a chair at the table like a family member. Now that he is older we keep him in after dark (which he sometimes complains about) It is important to us that sitters meet with us prior to undertaking the sit, so we require them to arrive the day before we travel. We also like people to remain in the house until our return. Sitters are welcome to stay an extra night if that is more convenient.

Logement

Our house was built in 1991. It is spread over 3 floors with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms (2 en suite). We have recently added a garden sun room to the rear of the house. Our street is a pleasant road about one mile from the city. It takes 20 minutes to walk to the city, though we are also on a bus route. We are close to the city boundary and therefore near to open countryside and places to walk. We have a large kitchen/dining room. We have a large T.V and DVD/Cd players. The house is heated by gas central heating, plus additional electric heaters. The garden is a great feature as it is large and south facing, great for eating out and bbq's when the weather is good!!

We do have quite a lot of books, some of which are walking books and guide's to good walks incorporating pubs in the countryside. There is also a selection of fiction available. We have a varied music selection and DVD's . We have a 48in T.V and a soundbar. Our new sun room provides great views of the garden & Alfie loves it. The glass sun room, is flooded with light, ideal on sunny days.

Our home provides good access to both city and country life. We are 20 minutes walk from the city centre, 15 minutes walk from the University, where there is a small highly respected theatre and some nice walks. There are 3 cinema's in the city, a museum a library and many shops restaurants and cafe's. The Phoenix Art Centre has many activities, and is in Gandy Street which is reputed to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley in JK Rowling's Harry Potter stories. JK Rowling was a student at Exeter University. Our house is a 10 minute walk to the nearest train station (St James Park) where you can get a train to the nearest beach (Exmouth). The mainline station (Exeter St Davids) is a 30 minute walk. Exeter bus station is 20 minutes walk away. It is possible to get to many places by public transport but if anyone wants to go to places a little less accessible hiring a car or bike is a good option too. There are many beaches around the coast of Devon. Dartmoor and Exmoor are also easy to visit for a day out.

My favourite beaches are in the north of Devon, so if you have a car I would head out for the day to Saunton, Woolacombe or Croyde, especially if you like surfing. It would be about 1,5 hours drive via Barnstaple. You can hire bikes at Barnstaple station to cycle the Tarka Trail. Staying closer to home Exmouth, Dawlish Warren, Sidmouth, Torquay are all worth a visit. If you like walking head for the moors, Dartmoor is the nearest. There are also some nice walks in Haldon forest which is only about a 20 minute drive.

Mary's house is extremely comfortable: anything you need + a wonderful garden + a beautiful winter garden to enjoy a lot of light and zen. The house is located only a few minutes away from the University campus: plenty of nature for your walks. Alfie (the cat) is very easy to live with: spends his time napping under the sun in the winter garden, purring near you on the couch, or sitting on the chair next to you when you work at the kitchen table. They are wonderful guests: welcoming, very well prepared (full guide and tour of the house) and helpful (grocery shopping, bus lines, etc), they have amazing cultural recommandations for you to enjoy the beauty of Exeter. Exeter is a come but lively city that I strongly recommend you take the time to visit: so much to see and discover.

Many thanks to Mary and Chris who really took care of the cats, even hepsie became a little bit less wild and shy ! They regularly gave me news and pics of the cats definitely showing how cats were happy with them! They apparently enjoyed in addition to the cats, my flat and the city. And they were super flexible when I had to change my date of return, many thanks again and again for all your kindness, I truly hope you will come back!

Mary & Chris are a lovely couple, very trustworthy and houseproud. Mary adores cats! They stayed in my house for a week, looking after my cat for 2 days, while I was moving home. They left the house in an immaculate condition, saving me the job of the "big clean up"! I would thoroughly recommend them.
