We have a 12 year old Shepherd-Husky mix named Kona, we've had her since she was nine weeks old. She was raised with a Chihuahua, so thinks she's small and she's a big ol' scaredy cat. She's the one with "specific needs" - summer/early fall bring afternoon thunderstorms in Colima, which are fun for us to watch, but they give her incredible anxiety, so she cannot be left alone for long periods of time. She needs people who can spend most of the day home with her. Obviously, trips to the store or to eat out are okay, but anything longer than two hours, and you risk her having a panic attack while you're gone. She doesn't require much, just someone to pet her through the storm.
We also have a six year old Yorkshire Terrier-Maltese mix named Korbin, who weighs a whopping five pounds. But he was raised with Kona, so he honestly believes he's her size. He also likes to sleep in bed and always be cuddling. He doesn't care about or even seem to notice the thunderstorms.
We also have two Chihuahuas, Kolima and Kaiser. They are two years old, and are exceptionally sweet. Kaiser is the boy and …

We also have two Chihuahuas, Kolima and Kaiser. They are two years old, and are exceptionally sweet. Kaiser is the boy and the heavyweight of the pair, around eight whole pounds. Kolima - easily the bravest of all four of the dogs - is around three pounds! The two are very bonded and love to run around the house with each other. They are kennel trained, so they spend their nights in a special kennel, though if you're so inclined, they love to snuggle and sleep in bed with people, too.
They're all very low maintenance - we have an enclosed backyard, that's where they'll go to play and do their business. Kona is an escape artist AND a runner, so we actually prefer it if she isn't walked outside the house if we're not present. The yard will be enough for her while we're gone. Korbin is spoiled and generally doesn't like to be outside. Kolima and Kaiser are so small, the backyard is fine for them. So no walks necessary for these dogs!
They're all healthy and fairly well trained. Give them some rawhides, and they're generally content with life.

It's a 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath house with two balconies upstairs, an office loft, and an enclosed backyard. The best part of the home - we have a private small plunge pool in our backyard! The whole reason we moved to this wonderful city. It's not for swimming, more for sitting and relaxing, which is perfect in the balmy summer weather. We even have a projector so you can lounge in the pool while watching your favorite movies or Netflix shows!
Just fifteen minutes north of the house is the Plaza Zentralia, a large shopping mall that has several department stores, lots of boutiques, a great food court, and a nice movie theatre. A Walmart is just ten minutes north, and the main road off our block is full of restaurants (a farmacia and a Dominos pizza are at the end of the block, with a large supermarket just three blocks down!), shops, taquerias, food carts, and lots more, all within walking distance. Everything you could need is right within reach!
Our dogs are an almost 12 year old shepherd-husky mix, a 6 year old yorkie-maltese mix, and two year old brother-sister pair of Chihuahuas. They're all very laid back, but the …

We have a 75" smart television in our living room - Netflix, YouTube, Amazon are all just a button press away. The master bedroom has a 65" smart tv, and the guest room a 55" smart tv.
We have large bookshelves with lots of books for people to choose from. Hector is pursuing photography and his photos can be seen in the office. Jennifer is a writer, her books are scattered about the house, as well. There is also a well equipped, comfortable office in a loft upstairs for anyone who needs to get some work done in a conducive environment, that also has a large balcony off it with lots of patio seating.
The master bedroom has a glass door that opens directly onto the backyard and pool area. The guest room has its own private balcony, with a lounging chair and a large umbrella for shade. Multiple air mattresses are available to be placed in the living room if necessary.
The kitchen and laundry room are both well equipped, with large capacity washer and dryer, and a fridge with a water dispenser.
The home itself also has a lot of security features, including an alarm and cameras.

The neighborhood is very lively, and every neighbor I've interacted with has been friendly and polite. We're on the outskirts of Colima, it's called Villa de Alvarez, so it's a very popular, very bustling area, full of activity all the time. It's not unusual to be walking down the street and stumble upon an elaborate parade, or to step out the front door and see men on horseback riding by!
Our home itself has two bedrooms, both of which have A/C. Both the master and the guest room have king sized beds. The house has very high ceilings, keeping it cool in the hot weather, and it gets the best breezes through the upstairs balconies, so it stays fairly cool on most days.
My favorite feature of our home is the private plunge pool. It's not large, but has built in bench seating surrounding all sides that can accommodate quite a few people - perfect for cooling off in the hot Colima days and mild nights. There is also shading over the backyard, so you can enjoy the amazing sunshine we get almost every day without having to blister under its direct rays!

Colima is - in my opinion - one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico. It's got the amenities of a big city, but feels like a small town, with lots of cobble stone roads and so much greenery, there are parks EVERYWHERE, including one park right outside our front door! Fresh seafood is also available everywhere you turn, with a bevy of local fare mixed with newer sushi restaurants.
Downtown in the historical center are great restaurants, boutiques, old buildings, several large churches, as well as a couple museums and a small zoo.
Comala is a small town about twenty minutes north, a designated "Pueblo Magico" - it's a great place to go to buy authentic Mexican goods and walk around all the white washed buildings and the gorgeous square. A hot tourist spot and easy to get to.
If you like history, it's right at your doorstep - there's a 25,000-acre complex of stone pyramids on the northern edge of Colima, called "La Campana", and it dates back to 1500 BC. It was discovered in 1574, and features shaft tombs, ceramics offerings, storm drain systems, avenues and an administrative and religious center with numerous monuments. It's a fun way to spend …

It's a fun way to spend the day. Or you can drive half an hour away and go to the Gruta de San Gabriel, an awesome cave system, owned and maintained by a private family deep in the farm land.
The small town of Cuyutlan and its fantastic beaches and the amazing Tortugario - a wildlife sanctuary where you can see the natural wet lands, turtles, crocodiles, and even release baby turtles back to the ocean! - are only an hour away, and the tourist spot of Manzanillo is one and a half hours away, so spending a day at the beach is just a short drive.
My first international house sit was fantastic, thanks to Hector & Jen. These two are the loveliest, sweetest couple, and their furbabies were a pleasure to keep and great company, too! Their home (and neighborhood) is quiet, private and very secure. It is the perfect getaway if you just want to hang out around the house and write, as I did. Or, if you want to get out and see some sights, it it perfectly situated in close proximity to some great tourist attractions. I highly recommend visiting Colima. The locals are kind and the vibe is super chill.
We very much enjoyed sitting for Hector and his wife. Both dogs were very well behaved, intelligent and just an overall pleasure to be with. Communication, before and during the sit, was never lacking and they left us well prepared with information if any situation should arise.
The home is very well decorated, very functional and comfortable. Their decorating taste has to be commended, very impressive indeed.
